Cape Town City sign free-scoring Colombian striker.
Juan Camilo Zapata, a forward from Colombia, has officially transferred to Cape Town City as the team attempts to turn around its Premier Soccer League (PSL) fortunes this year.
The 28-year-old, who was acquired from top-tier Venezuelan club Colmenarez, was also verified by City as the club’s record transfer.
Cape Town City sign free-scoring Colombian striker.
The player will be available for City from the beginning of next month.
After a sluggish start to the season, the Citizens currently find themselves in the bottom half of the DStv Premiership. Zapata joins them at this point.
City also failed to advance through the MTN8 quarterfinals, thus their Caf Champions League goal was not achieved.
The statistics on transfermarkt.co.za show that Zapata is a player who can score goals.
During the 2021–2022 season, he made 35 appearances for Colmenarez in all competitions, with 19 goals and three assists.
In the season prior, Zapata scored 12 goals in 31 games played in Venezuela.
The Capetonians may be preparing for life without Khanyisa Mayo, who has been linked to PSL powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, or they may simply be adding to City’s weaponry in an effort to rise up the log.
Craig Martin, who joined Soweto Giants Orlando Pirates to reinforce their squad in an effort to challenge Sundowns for the league title, has also left City.
Zapata is the club’s second acquisition this month after former Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho’s recent confirmation by the organization.
