Update: Man arrested for beating up 16-year-old boy outside Groblersdal mall

A 50-year-old man was arrested by Polokwane police this week for assaulting a 16-year-old kid outside a shopping mall.

The teenager is shown being shoved to the ground at the Groblersdal Game Centre by a man wielding a handgun in a video that has gone viral on social media. He then kicked and stomped on the boy’s chest while he was down.

According to a police statement made on Thursday, the event occurred at 6:30 p.m.

The man is now charged with assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm and pointing a handgun.

The two appeared to have gotten into an altercation after the teen’s cousin asked to split spice with the man.

According to reports, the man was nasty to the cousin, prompting the adolescent to interfere. The man then assaulted him while pointing his weapon at him. The man’s identity has remained a mystery.

“We will not tolerate incidents of gender-based violence and attacks on our children and we will ensure that justice prevails for the victim. In the meantime, we urge community members to remain calm and allow us space to deal with the matter, ” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe through the statement.

After the event, the teen was brought to the hospital and later released. The man was arrested when he opened his complaint at the police station.

The suspect will appear before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
