Teen Pregnancy Factfile In South Africa
- South Africa has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy globally, with nearly one in four girls falling pregnant before turning 20 years old.
- This is according to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).
- The prevalence of teenage pregnancy in South Africa came back into the spotlight during Pregnancy Awareness Week, from 10 to 16 February.
- Local evidence that the situation is alarming is the latest adolescent pregnancy data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), which shows that 90 037 girls aged ten to 19 years gave birth from March 2021 to April 2022 in all nine provinces. The report further revealed that of the almost 34 000 teenage pregnancies during 2020, 660 of those were girls under the age of 13 years.
Teen pregnancy rife in SA
- In South Africa among female youth 19.2% had had an adolescent pregnancy, and among male youth 5.8% had impregnated a girl when they were an adolescent (12–19 years), 16.2% of the women ever had an unwanted pregnancy and 6.7% had ever terminated a pregnancy.
