Idols SA Contestant Sentenced To 10 Years In Jail

Idols said contestant sentenced to 10 years in jail

A one-time Idols hopeful has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars for trafficking drugs from Brazil into SA.

Ibrahim Cook, who twice won a golden ticket in a televised competition to find South Africa’s greatest young vocalist in 2014, was convicted last Thursday in the Verulam magistrate’s court.

Cook, also known as “Gordon Jordaan” and “Gordan Cook,” was dubbed “the show’s most happy contestant” by Idols at the time.

He was 23 when he entered the contest. He won a golden ticket twice after auditioning in Pretoria and Gqeberha that year.

A golden ticket is given to contestants who impress judges in the first round and allows them to proceed to the next phase.

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Capt Simphiwe Mhlongo said Cook was arrested at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport in December 2014 “after information of drug trafficking was received by Hawks members.

“Cook was coming from Sao Paulo in Brazil when he was found in possession of 1kg of cocaine powder to the street value of about R300,000.

Langa, known as ‘S22kile’, was announced as one of the top eight finalists on Sunday.

Since the announcement, social media has been buzzing with people showing her support.

Her parents revealed that she had previously tried to enter the SA Idols competition, but she did not get to audition due to the long queues.
