Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima’s motorcade was involved in a fatal accident this afternoon. According to reports , the VP’s motorcade was travelling from Blantyre to the Capital City Lilongwe when disaster struck. The last car in the convoy, a Toyota Landcruiser V8 Station Wagon collided head-on with a Toyota Vitz after the latter’s driver lost control and encroached into the oncoming lane.
The accident occurred at Mtimaoyera near Phalula. The Toyota Vitz Vehicle had four occupants of which two died on the spot, another died on admission to hospital and the fourth victim sustained serious injuries.
The driver of the Land Cruiser escaped the ordeal with minor injuries. His passenger a senior police superintendent reported chest pain but nothing life-threatening,

Chilima’s Spokesman Phirani Phiri confirmed the incident saying the Vice President is safe as he was in a different vehicle.
“The accident involved one vehicle on the convoy which had a head-on collision with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction, a Toyota Vitz which had four people on board, two of them are feared dead.”
“The other two have been rushed to the hospital together with the driver of the vehicle on the convoy. The Vice President was not affected in any way and he is fine,” said Phiri.
