Having clocked up several thousand nights in hotels here are the things I do immediately.

• Check the deadbolt, the chain.
• Look through the peephole to see if my view is clear ( often dirt or smudges can be found from the inside)
• Check the windows to verify integrity of the locks
• Check the locks on the door from my side of the connecting room
• Check the safe that it works
• Check for bottled water availability (tap water may not always be availble)
• See the floor plan layout and familiarize myself with the emergency exit location
• Check for any notice left in the room about civil works or fire alarm testing
• Always inform a friend or family member of my room number and the hotel phone number and address via
• WhatsApp email text immediately
• If arriving late night and have an early start then check for the iron and board get it immediately saves you a good 30 minutes in the morning
• Checking all toiletries are in place especially if you aren’t carrying any yourself and calling for them immediately
