Two South African Cabinet Ministers HospitalizedTwo South African Cabinet Ministers Hospitalized: Thulas Nxesi and Gwede Mantashe
In a rather unwelcome development, two South African ministers have been hospitalized after contracting coronavirus.
On Monday, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe became the first member of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet to be admitted to hospital due to the COVID-19 virus. Mantashe was taken to hospital on the advice of the family doctor so that he would “get better medical attention and monitoring”. His wife, Nolwandle, who also tested positive for the disease, remains in self-quarantine
Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi was also hospitalized last night on the advice of his medical doctors, almost a week after he tested positive for coronavirus and went into self-quarantine at his home.
In a statement on Tuesday morning, Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu revealed that Nxesi, has been hospitalized to enable better medical attention and monitoring. The Presidency said,
About a week ago, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Gwede Mantashe (MP) and his wife, Mrs Nolwandle Mantashe tested positive for Covid-19, which necessitated them to self-quarantine.
Today, [20 July 2020] Minister Mantashe was admitted to hospital on the advice of their family doctor for better medical attention and monitoring, whilst Mrs Mantashe will continue to self-quarantine at their home.
We will continue to give the Mantashe family all the support they need during this time. We wish both Minister and Mrs Mantashe a speedy recovery from this invisible enemy and we are quite confident that they will emerge victorious against the coronavirus.
… The Minister of Employment and Labour, Mr Thembelani ‘Thulas’ Nxesi (MP), was admitted to hospital last night due to Covid-19. The Minister tested positive for the coronavirus almost a week ago and has, until last night, been in self-quarantine at home.
His admission to the hospital comes on the advice of his medical doctors, in order for him to have access to better medical attention and proper monitoring.
Minister Nxesi is the second member of Cabinet to be admitted to hospital after Minister Gwede Mantashe. We wish both Minister Nxesi and Minister Mantashe well and a speedy recovery.
The hospitalization of the two ministers comes at a time when the number of cases in South Africa is approaching 400 000. At 373 628 cases, South Africa is now in the top 5 in the world for the highest number of coronavirus cases.
