Television executive Nkateko Mabaso has passed away, sending shockwaves through South Africa’s TV and film industry. The cause of his death remains unknown. He is survived by his wife Mathapelo, son Tshimologo, and parents Xithlangoma Bob and Lizzy Mabaso, according to News24

In a recent development that has garnered significant attention, renowned South African media personality Minnie Dlamini has been accused of infidelity in her marriage to Quinton Jones. The alleged affair reportedly involved Nkateko Mabaso, a prominent figure in the African media landscape. Concerning allegations suggest that Mabaso may have exploited his influential roles to secure employment opportunities for Dlamini at DSTV, according to @Musa_Khawula

In a statement, Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice South Africa’s CEO for general entertainment, who succeeded Mabaso in this role, expressed, “It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Nkateko Mabaso.”

Nomsa Philiso said:

Nkateko, fondly known to most as NK, was a maverick within the M-Net world, where he held various roles and was instrumental in the implementation and growth of our mass and middle market propositions, with the flagship being the iconic Mzansi Magic.

“We will always remember NK; he left an indelible mark with his work on iconic productions such as Isibaya, The Queen, and events such as the Channel O Awards, DMVCAs and a whole host of others. May his family, friends and colleagues find comfort during this very difficult time,” Nomsa Philiso continued.

 

Mabaso, who has traveled extensively across Africa, Europe, and the United States, participated in the Naspers’ Leadership Accelerator program in Amsterdam—a city he would later come back to as a Netflix executive.He has won multiple accolades, such as being recognized as one of Destiny Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2016 and being listed among Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans in the media segment in 2013.\

 

 

 

Two years later, in October 2020, he was once more promoted to MultiChoice’s group executive overseeing programming, managing content commissioning for the broader MultiChoice Group. He held this position for a year before resigning. Subsequently, he transitioned to Netflix, assuming the role of director of licensing and co-productions for Africa within the expanding video streaming service. After working in this position for a year and five months in Amsterdam, he quietly left and returned to South Africa.

Since June 2023, Mabaso has been self-employed in content curation and distribution. He made a public appearance at SABC Video Entertainment Content Fest 2024 programming upfront three months ago in March in Johannesburg, where he was one of the attendees, according to News24
